[comp.sys.ibm.pc] wanted HERC->CGA program

ajoseph@pyr1.cs.ucl.ac.uk (01/20/88)

Hi, I'm sure I've seen messages on emulating CGA graphics in mono using
herculies graphics. Could anyone tell me where I can get a PD version of
a program to do this, many thanks

What you need is a program called SIMCGA. It lets your hercules card
emulate a CGA and works fairly well. I've had trouble with it on a DATA
XT clone but it seems to work fine on everything else. You can most likely
find it on a local BBS w/o any problem. If not (or if you have problems)
send me email and I'll email the stuff to you ...

You also need SETCGA. I do not know if these are REALLY PD. I have them
and if anyone can prove they are PD, I can email or post if a lot of
interest. I found that some clones with PHOENIX BIOS would not let
these programs work correctly (sometimes lost cursor), but when I
changed to a GST BIOS they worked fine.

SIMCGA (as a package) is indeed in the public domain. See the README
file that comes with the package, it explains various settings and
conditions. Also, SETCGA and SETMONO are really *optional* in that
once SIMCGA is resident, you need not switch modes unless you *want*
to go back to the Herc. graphics mode. Another nice feature of it is
when you do set back to MONO (using SETMONO), it will automatically
go back into CGA mode (without any intervention) if the program being
run calls for CGA graphics. If somebody is to post it, it may be best
to include the .DOC (readme) file. I have the complete copy here, and
is only 70 lines as a UUENCODED ARCHIVED file. If anyone wants it,
I can mail it, unless I'm inundated by requests for such in which case
I'll post. Enjoy,
---

Setcga.com is part of the simcga.arc group of files. They can be
(and are) distributed on many, many BBSs. The docs will indicate
if they are PD or shareware.

Here is a program which works well enough to run real BASICA on Herculae
with four "colors," in dither, even. I can't believe that this posting
of 50 lines will take as much bandwidth as all the people who will post
messages saying "please mail me a copy." Here it is with support
routines and source.
