[comp.sys.ibm.pc] ALR 386 keyboard

singer@XN.LL.MIT.EDU (Matthew R. Singer) (01/19/88)

Back in the old days of the original 64K motherboard IBM PC, there
was a freeware program called DEFKEY which allowed you to swap the
shift and \ keys (or any others for that matter).

After awhile, my keyboard died and I replaced it with a keytronics
which had the keys in the right place...

Now the problem:

I just purchased an ALR 386/220 which has the new style "enhanced"
keyboard with the caps lock key where control should be. I can
almost deal with the esc key being a the top by the function keys
but I cant deal with ctrl being next to the space bar. Makes
using Emacs a royal pain.

Now the question:

DEFKEY (from 1983) won't work on this new machine (or any AT) I
have been told. Is there a similar key redefintion program that
will work on 286/386 class machines? Or can anyone suggest a
replacement keyboard which has the keys in the right place?
Can I use a 5150 (I think??) keyboard from a standard PC on this
machine? I know that you can't on the original Compaq Deskpro...

Help!!!! I can't type on this thing!!!

Maxiswitch makes a keyboard which does what you want. It even has a new
set of keycaps to reflect the correction. I have a program around which
does this for DOS, but I never even tried it, since it wouldn't help me
with any UNIX. If 20 people don't dig it out soon I'll seriously look
for the package. It makes F12 the caplock key...

I have a keyboard (multitech) with the stupid escape key way over on the right,
in the keypad, and the squiggle and accent where the escape key should be. It
also looks like the backarrow key is HARDWIRED to the ^H key!!!! (at least that
is what the manufacturer told me. I too would like this program....
