[comp.sys.ibm.pc] changing autoexec.bat's for Fastbac

loafman@convexe.UUCP (01/28/88)

I've seen references to FastBack Plus a couple of times over the last
month, and am just wondering... Is FastBack Plus a new product? Do
legitimate owners of FastBack 5.13 get notified of the product? Is
there an upgrade price, or is it a "new product", and previous owners
get to pay the full price again?

I have not heard from Fifth Generation in a while. I've been pleased
with the 5.13 product, but absolutely refuse to pay full price for
something derived from a product for which I've already paid. Any
legit FastBack Plus users out there with reasonable answers?

We bought both 5.13 and FB+. I don't recall ever getting an upgrade
notice; we saw ads for the new version and just ordered it.

You may or may not actually want to "upgrade". The older versions
worked a little faster but weren't as cleanly interfaced, and had
problems with some configurations (eg RLL drives). The new version is
supposed to work with all kinds of configurations that the older ones
didn't, has a really nice interface, and writes MS-DOS readable disks.
It's also somewhat slower, although putting it in "compress when you
have time" mode gives it good performance and good disk savings.

Basically, unless you're unhappy with something about 5.13, you might
just want to keep it and forget the newer one. "If it works...."
