The 1987 forms look like real spaghetti. Does anyone have recommendations for reasonably priced PC software to prepare personal income tax forms? First hand experience with both good and bad programs would be most appreciated. Thanks. Mel Haas , [ihnp4!]mtfmi!mel

I have been using Best's PC Taxcut for several years. I like the user interface much better than the other packages. This one is organized by item type (income, expenses, information, deductions, etc.) rather than merely 'computerizing' the forms. You give this program your data, and *it* figures out where everything belongs on all the forms. PC Taxcut used to be quite expensive (over $300), but last year they dropped the price to $75, removed the copy protection, and got to be much more reasonable to deal with. They actively encourage you to let your friends use it to do their taxes, in the hopes that your friends will be impressed and buy a copy. I have no connection with Best Programs, except as a satisfied customer. -- Mark D. Hundt / BELLCORE Morristown NJ / hundt@bellcore.bellcore.com Sorry Tom, The license says the program can only be run on machines I own. If you are really considering buying a copy, the do offer a 15-day money-back warranty if you don't like it. It shouldn't take you that long to do your taxes using this program, if you have all the data you need. The legal language in the license agreement may be contradicting their advertised encouragement to let other folks do their taxes on a registered copy of the software. Since I am not a lawyer, I'm not sure. I'll just play it safe. I have friends use it to do their taxes, but they do them here on my equipment. -- Mark D. I ususally do my taxes on a spread sheet so rather then everyone reinventing the wheel wouldnt it be nice if several people unscrambled the tax form for their spread sheet and then posted the dif file to the net? Comments please!

Contact your friendly local PC computer users group, and see if they have the "shareware" AMTAX program. I don't have any experience yet with it, though I will be trying it out soon, and you can't beat the price! We just got it into our users groups disk catalog and will be demonstrated at our next meeting in Feb. (San Francisco PC Jr Users Group -- and NO, the program is NOT PC Jr specific, so keep your shirt on!) . . |=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-| "What will I be when I grow up? | Herb Gellis | You are already grown up. | {ucbvax,...}!hplabs!hpindda!herb | You mean this is as UP as I will get?..." |=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-| | | David Gerrold, "When HARLIE Was One" --- ---

I purchased a copy of TurboTax by ChipSoft in San Diego, CA 922122 (619)453-8722. It completed my tax a lot quicker than I could have done them otherwise. Also, their are State tax programs that tie to the TurboTax and do them also. i am waiting for the Colorado tax package to finish mine. It does take a little getting used to, but after you get the hang of it, it works fairly slick. Harry E.
