I know the title sounds strange, but it is true. I am looking for a dictionary on diskette that is in IBM / Commodore 64 / Commodore 128 format. It can be in either. It may sound wierd, but I need one that will also have maybe a small definition of each word. This would be good for word games and such when you wouldn't have to go leafing through a big 'ole dictionary, you could just sit there and type the word on your computer and see what it brings up. Is there such a product? Jo Poplawski jep@tlxprs.UUCP

Webster's Collegiate used to be available on 12 mag tapes, and was very cheap for educational institutions. There's at least one dictionary available on CD-ROM. I don't know of anything practical for a typical XT class machine. Mike Berger Center for Advanced Study University of Illinois berger@clio.las.uiuc.edu {ihnp4 | convex | pur-ee}!uiucuxc!clio!berger

I have seen a word list (without definitions, etc.) that is available from The Austin Code Works for a very good price ($60, I think it was). It is a plain ASCII file that fills several floppies. 250,000 words, or so. Look for their ads in Dr. Dobb's Journal, BYTE, etc. -- Gerry Wheeler Phone: (519)884-2251 Mortice Kern Systems Inc. A fairly complete word list has just been posted to the comp.os.minix news group over the past couple weeks.

I am not familiar with the word list Michael refers to, but a few can be found on local BBS's that contain comments to the effect that the list contains (in addition to other words) all of the words in the WordPerfect 4.2 (and other's) dictionary. Folks should be aware that the collection of words contained in the WordPerfect dictionary (or any other commercial dictionary, for that matter) are protected by a Compilation Copyright. While I doubt if anybody is going to get upset if you use such a word list on your home machine, I would check it out pretty carefully before I used one in a commercial product. I think that the makers of WordPerfect would have to prove that the words in question were gathered using their compilation. ast said that the words in his list were gathered from papers and books that he wrote. -- -russ AT&T: (315)268-6591 BITNET: NELSON@CLUTX Internet: nelson@clutx.clarkson.edu GEnie: BH01 Compu$erve: 70441,205
