Hello again, news-groupies! I would like to thank all the people who responded to my request for printer recommendations. In a word, Epson was recommended hands down as always dependable. Unfortunately, they don't make too many 24-pin models (2 I think) that were reasonably priced. The NEC P6 got high marks too. I happen to have had the opportunity to have used one and I spoke to people who have P6's and P7's. They all concur that it's a very good printer. If I were asked the question I posted, I would have to recommend Epson or NEC - Epson has the reputation, defacto-standard, and model choices, while NEC has 24 pin models, Epson LQ emulation and a similar price (as the Epsons). Which one did I buy? I hunted for the best price and ordered the NEC P6 from Warehouse Data Products in Arizona (800-421-3135). I also ordered the bi-directional tractor feed. Their prices were: NEC P6 Parallel Printer $419.00 Bi-directional Tractor Feed 105.00 The next best price on the printer I found was $425 from Telemart and Silicon Specialities. (Interestingly, their price for the tractor feed was $99; I couldn't make any deals with Warehouse Data Products to save 6 bucks. :-). Thanks again for the recommendations. Regards- -Mark H. Granoff

mhg@mitre-bedford.ARPA (Mark H. Granoff): > NEC P6 Parallel Printer $419.00 > Bi-directional Tractor Feed 105.00 I just bought a Epson LQ-500 for $365.00. It is letter quality (with Roman and Sans Serif fonts) plus a slot for new font cards. It can print up to 180cps at draft mode and 60cps at letter quality mode. Everything looks good and I am satisfied with it. As I understand, this is a new model from Epson. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ H. [deleted enthusiastic comments about Epson LQ500 printer] Does the Epson LQ500 have IBM box and line drawing characters in the Epson mode (past Epsons have had italics in the Epson mode, and box drawing characters only in the IBM graphics printer, i.e. no 12 pitch, mode, as I understand it)? Is the Epson LQ500 lq font as nice as on the other LQ series (800, 1500, etc.)? Michael Volow, M.D. Dept of Psychiatry, Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, N.C. 27705 919 286 0411 mvolo@ecsvax.UUCP

Also you can still print italics using the ESC 4 command. It also allow 10, 12, 15 pitches on all three standard fonts and proportional spacing on the two LQ fonts. I haven't seen the quality on other Epson LQ series but the LQ-500 certainly looks letter quality to me. The LQ-500 is a narrow printer; but when using 12 pitch condensed mode, it may print 160 characters per line. > Michael Volow, M.D. > Dept of Psychiatry, Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, N.C. 27705 > 919 286 0411 mvolo@ecsvax.UUCP -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ H.
