I'm been looking all over hell's half-acre for a copy of the song, "Classical Gas", by Mason Williams, and haven't been able to find it anywhere. I know it came out as a single quite a while ago (late '60s I think), but I'm not sure if he put out an album containing the song. I've been told that it might be a rare record, only to be found in stores specializing in such things. If anybody could give me any helpful hints as to the song's background, as well as where I might be able to find it, I'd much appreciate it. I've learned to play it from sheet music, and would really like to hear the recorded version of it. I live in the Baltimore/Washington area. David Knill ...seismo!rlgvax!cvl!umcp-cs!aplvax

"The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" is the album on which "Classical Gas" appeared. This is a marvelous, eclectic collection of jottings in essentially random styles. Some of the highlights, in addition to "Gas", are "Life Song" (0:27, an excellent summation), "The Prince's Panties" (no, the prince is not a transvestite), and "Sunflower" (Mason plays guitar and pucker on a tune which apparently was originally the music to which a 3 mile high by 2 mile wide sunflower was drawn). The producer was Mike Post. I have no idea where you can get a copy. I noticed a while back in the cutout racks that Mason put out a second album, which I neglected to buy (sob). Also, he has a bunch of books out. -Joe P.
