Besides noticing the "ls .." problem.  I found several more:
1. cat  converts tabs to spaces (very rude if you are using 
   cat to conCATenate files).
2. mv and cp'ed files do not keep their original time stamp.
3. I found some mysterious problem with mv when the destination
   was a directory in another disk (the file was mved to the current
   disk to a file with the desired directory name).

I removed cat mv and cp, going back to my old versions.  I may do the
same for ls.
