[comp.sys.ibm.pc] HI TECH / STEVE ZIP...SCAM WARNING!

karl@lrakAT.UUCP (1602) (02/18/88)

A friend of mine had ordered a used hard disk from "Hi Tech Asset Recovery"
for $75.00. Although the drive was sold "AS-IS", the lady on the phone
said it was removed from working equipment. Ok fine. Sounds risky.

Well the drive was received in an unworking state. However the drive
looks like it has no time on it at all. The box also included a "special"
from a repair place for fixing the drive.

The next day I was talking to another repair place about a different
drive, and in passing told them about the CMI drive ordered from HI TECH.
They said they had recieved many phone calls about the CMI drives, and
the ones they received were missing an EPROM on the bottom board.
It seems very strange that this should be the only problem with the
drive.

Anyway, does anyone know what kind of EPROM is used and if I can get a
copy legally from anyone? The drive is a CMI-6426.

Thanks in advance for any information.
