[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Qedit Wish List

dsnow@watdcsu.waterloo.edu (Doug Snow) (02/20/88)

I just noticed an article which said that a new version of Qedit was
about to be released. This is absolutely my favourite editor and I've been
keeping a list of things that have occurred to me about it. Some of these
are wishes and some are bugs. To the Author ( whose name I've long lost ),
you've done an exceptional piece of work. I've been intending to post this
for a long time ......

These are Bugs or Irritations I've noticed with Qedit Version 1.30a

* Lines Longer than 255 Characters are Discarded! This is very irritating
since many packages, or files may only have LF terminators. Why not
do a LF/CR translate? ( Even temporarily ).

* File Names longer than 8 characters bump into the Extension. Ie. If
I inadvertantly type Q 123456789.123 The filename becomes
123456789.12 and is then saved as 12345678.12!

* Feature: Global Replace should allow me to specify <NULL> as the
search string and assume this means the beginning of each line.
Ie. Say I have a list of Files and I want to insert DEL<SP> at the
beginning of each line... there is no way to do this and I have to
switch editors ( Or write filter 9000 in a series ).

* Why are block selections not saved between file Windows? This is a Minor
point, but occassionally I want to Make some block selection, then before
doing anything I want to switch windows to check something.

* Since the editor is so configurable, Why not A memory Resident HELP
screen? I realize this would slow things down and Possibly defeat the
spirit of the Editor, but it could be configured in. I wouldn't need it,
but, since I try and turn people onto the editor, this is their major
fear.

* I don't like the filename prompt after exiting files or forgetting
a filename. Minor point though, I live well with it as it is. Why not allow it
to be configured out?

* Any intention of allowing column oriented or word, line, oriented block
selection?
			Thanks and have fun ..

There is a standalone TSR help screen for Qedit available at Simtel20. It's
in PD1:<MSDOS.SYSUTL>QHELP135.ARC (10k, including source). I could be
persuaded to post it if there is sufficient demand....

QEDIT is very configurable, but I really wish it were a tad more flexible,
(and allowed 'modes') so one could whip up a blindingly fast 'vi' clone...

QEdit version 2.0 has a help command which displays one screenful of text
which you create and install using QCONFIG. 2.1 etc may change this to
be a seperate file which would be loaded upon issuance of the help command
QEdit v 2.0 is available from the author at (404) 428-6416

I think this has been taken care of, but I'll check.

Taken care of with a 1-screen user-customizable screen.

Version 2 has both line and stream (character-by-character) blocks. Column-
oriented blocks will come.

Doug - Thanks for your comments. I AM NOT THE AUTHOR, but am a betatester
and will pass your comments/suggestions on to him (Sammy Mitchell). If
anyone else has comments/criticizims/suggestions for QEdit, MAIL them to
me at stevenj@umbc3.umd.edu and I will pass them along. You will probably get
no response from me, but I will have sent them along, I'm just pretty busy.
Or just USnailMail them (along with Shareware registrations and update
requests) to: SEMWare
730 Elk Cove Ct. Kennesay, GA 30144
                 (404) 428-6416
yes, this is a new address - Sammy's moved.
ps- do me a favor and mention where you heard (saw) this and from whom.
he tries to keep track of where recommendations are being listened to.
