[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Help with Seagate 4051

claus@CS.UCLA.EDU (02/25/88)

I am having problems low-level formatting my 4051, numerous cylinders
are being found as bad (only on heads 1 and 2). I am using the SpeedStor
software that came with the drive. Does anyone know of some PD software that
will let me format the drive? My dealer claims that the software is to blame,
and won't work on the machine because I re-did the formatting he did.
I didn't test the machine thoroughly the way he had it set up, but I almost
think the same problems would have surfaced. Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

A couple of suggestions:

1) When I had my 4051, it *CAME* with a good set of software called
DISKMANAGER. It's not PD, but I believe Seagate supplies it with
all of it's drives. Your 'dealer' (I'm assuming a local dealer)
should have it, and you should DEMAND it. If he maintains his
attitude, call your local Seagate Rep. (1-800-468-3472).

2) In addition, your `dealer' sounds like a real <fill-in-explicative>!
secondary low level formats are REQUIRED in several situations!
(like when you want your PC on it's side, after it's been
laying flat on a desk) You should ask him what his problem
is and tell him to get off his throne and support his customers!
( before they drop him for a more reliable one )

3) and now for an inportant consideration: My seagate 4051 started
developing electrical problems after about 2 months of use. I
was reformatting (going from msdos to uport unix :-) and started
getting large numbers of bad blocks that weren't there before.
further low-level-formats gave me different lists entirely!
it turns out that the drives logic board had problems and the
drive was replaced by the dealer. Your dealer should realize
that drives CAN develope problems after a short period of use,
and he could need to replace it as a defective purchase!

I've had terrible experiences with some dealers in the past, but
finally found a good one, who I now do all my business with. :-)

My advice: stick to your guns and dont back down. Dont be
obnoxious, just inform him of his responsibilities to his
customers (ain't free-enterprise great;-)
