I've been playing with the new release of QEDIT and tried to create a custom HELP screen for myself as (nominally) documented in the accompanying "manual". Although my text file has fewer characters than that supplied with QEDIT, when I execute QCONFIG to read it in to the Q.COM file, I get a message like "too many characters at line xx". Has anyone else run into this problem? I would have assumed that a ~2K buffer would be set aside interally for the purpose of containing the help text, but this looks not to be the case. -- Jay Elvove jay@umd5.umd.edu c/o Systems, Computer Science Center, U. of MD.

Sammy Mitchell (the creator of Qedit) is extremely concerned about keeping the program as small as possible. In an attempt to keep the program size small he only allocated a small buffer (1200 bytes I think) for the help area with a compression scheme which expands the help display when it is asked for. Unfortunately, if you have a full help screen to put into the program (full ==> few spaces) his compression scheme cannot make it fit into his buffer. In the latest beta version of the next release he has expanded the buffer to 1600 bytes. (Personally I have to wonder if the code which expands this is worth the 400 bytes he is still trying to save, but it's his program.) J.
