[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Upgrading a Tandy 1000 SX

840411s@aucs.UUCP (Black Widow) (03/04/88)

I have a Tandy 1000 SX with two 360K drives, 640K internal, and a color
graphics chip. Inside my machine, there is an empty slot right next to
a chip (I don't know what it does, think it is the processor?) on the
far left side of the cabinet. Someone told me that the 8087 goes there,
is he right? If so, hoe much does it cost?

Also, I want to expand to include a hard disk, yet want to keep my two
floppies, not lose on. Is there any way I can do that that isn't too
expensive.

Please e-mail me answers. Thanx.

The Tandy 1000 SX does not use a strait 8087 but a sort of custon 8087 that
does the same job... at last look, RS wanted 439 bucks Canadian for the chip.
... To my knowledge, a strait 8087 refuses to be recognised...

I ran into the same problem with my Tandy 1000A.... Tandy designs their
computers to be as uncompatible as possible in order to force you to buy
their rediculously overpriced peripherals...

So I am happy to tell users how to circumvent their marketing BS....
The Tandy 1000 requires a CMOS 8087!!! Mine used an 80C87... this is
slightly more expensive than the 8087-2 but far less than $400!!!

Mine cost $129.... for the 80C87-2 you shouldn't pay more than $150 american
