I have a Compaq Deskpro, circa 1985. One year ago I put in
a NEC V30. Since then I've run all kinds of software with
NO PROBLEMS.
Tonight I went through the exercise of backing up a 20 MB hard
disk to 360k floppies, and upgrading from MS-DOS 2.11 to PC-DOS 3.3.
I did this to take advantage of supposeedly more efficient 3.3, and
to have 3.3 support for 720KB 3.5" drive which I am installing next
week. (I got it free! No -- I would not purchase one of these alien
things.)
Well, guess what? My machine won't boot from the hard disk. I can
boot from DOS 3.3 in drive A, and everything works fine. The hard
disk is all there -- and I reloaded all my software and tested everything
with NO PROBLEMS.
But, if I try to boot from the hard disk, it just hangs. I never get
anything.
Actually, I had a couple of other peculiarities:
1) WHen I tried to run PC 3.3 basica, I got a message
telling me to load Compaq MS-DOS diskette in drive A or B.
Bizarre! That means the EPROM is intercepting BASICA
invocations.
2) Machine now boots in slow (4.77 red light mode) instead of
7.14.

That means the EPROM is intercepting BASICA > invocations. If you will recall your history lessons, IBM in its "wisdom" decided to put about 80% of basic on rom. Therefore, you can not run the stock basica provided with the DOS. You must copy your old basic from the 2.11 version to get a basic to run on the compaq (actually, this applies to all clones). > > 2) Machine now boots in slow (4.77 red light mode) instead of > 7.14. There is nothing you can do about this. Compaq's version of msdos automatically switches to high speed for you, but since IBM has only had slow speed, Stock IBM DOS 3.x isn't going to switch it. As to why your hard disk doesn't boot, I don't know. Did you reformat it, instead of just typeing 'sys c:'? If you didn't, do it. If you did then try reinstalling ms2.11, then boot DOS 3.3 and do a sys c:. (These are guesses, I know that I have successfully gotten past releases of IBM's DOS to run of my harddisk on my Compaq, though I usually upgrade to the equivalent Compaq DOS when possible, since bus timing is a little trickier on the compaq and compaq's DOS handles it better that IBM's).
