<not an enigma> With out a doubt, the most utterly mind-roasting bassist is Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes. His Mariachi solo on "Please Do Not Go" (recorded with three mikes simutaneously) is simply sublime. Oh yeah.... Miroslav Vitos, James Jamerson (just about every Motown session), Donald "Duck" Dunn (Booker T. & M.G.'s), Bruce Foxton (the Jam -for sheer enthusiasm even though he does use a pick), Jo Dworniak (I-Level and Style Council sessions), Paul Simenon (The Clash -because he relies on instinct alone) and last but not least Richard Hell (Voidoids -the only guy I've seen go through 3 sets of strings in one evening due to his intense flailings) are O.K. too. -- Tim (L'ame frere numero deux) Perlich ...watmath!watrose!tjperlich

<My sacrificial line to net.gods> The first few lines of my article got munched by unseen forces. I was going to put John Deacon of Queen as a vote for a great bassist. Some of his lyrics in the past were more the wonderful. As I said before, he ranks behind Chris Squire of Yes and Geddy Lee of RUSH. Freebo, who usually plays with Bonnie Raitt, can make a Fender Fretless hum and a tuba really sing. I truly think that he can make just about any instrument work as a bass. What a guy. Heather Emanuel {allegra, decvax!brunix, linus, ccieng5} rayssd!hxe

crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch....... Speaking of James Jamerson, does anybody know what OTHER name he records under? Correct answers win a solo chorus in the key of his/her choice. "Bootsy, are you a star?" "Uh, twinkle, twinkle, baby" Charlie Berg
