Apologies if this has been hashed out already -- net mail reply might suffice. Does anyone know of a good background file transfer program, preferably one that handles Kermit? Timothy Sipples | sipples%husc2@husc6.harvard.edu | sipples@husc2.bitnet | ...ihnp4!seismo!harvard!husc6!husc2!sipples

I know that this has been discussed on the net before, however, I did not pay close attention for I was not interested in it at the time. I need to be able to do background file transfer using kermit protocol. Does anyone out there have such a beast. Memory is no problem. I work in a department that does a lot of file transfer. It just takes to long, so we would like to do our other work while the transfer is taking place. Any PD code would be very welcome. Or how it can be done using a number of programs...Thanks in advance... ===================================== ^ ================================= Edward L. Replies concerning Background File Transfer Programs. As a Note: I heard of something a while back called async. It was a PD program for asynchronous communication devices. If anyone has any information please forward to edward@ga.ecn.purdue.edu or ...!pur-ee!edward. Thanks in advance. Now back to the replies... Yes but it's not free/sharware. It's called Mirror and it is a fairly nice communications package with an extensive batch program utility. I received the program free when I bought my modem but I believe it runs @$50 complete. It will do 1000 packet Kermit File transfers in the background using @127K. I am very happy with the product. -- Mike "Dodger" Patnode | (n) ..csustan!polyslo!mpatnode Yitbos Innovations Inc. | (s) ..sdsu!polyslo!mpatnode 244 California Blvd | mpatnode@polyslo.UUCP San Luis Obispo, Ca 92630 | (805) 541-2048 / 543-9818 / 756-2516 --- I use Mirror, a commercial program, to do background transfers using the kermit protocol. It was originally released as a "clone" of Crosstalk, but their new version (after a lawsuit) is now available... I think in can be had (I've seen ads in BYTE) for about $60. Kurt Indermaur --- Unaware of any PD background file transfer comm programs. If you find one, post its name to the net. Commercial background comm programs include Backcomm, Sidetalk, and Mirror. Alternatives to background comm programs that work include using a regular comm progarm with an environment program such as Desqview, DoubleDos, etc. Michael Volow, M.D. Dept of Psychiatry, Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, N.C. 27705 919 286 0411 mvolo@ecsvax.UUCP --- I use Kermit all the time in "background" mode with DESQview. I merely set DV to not swap the Kermit window. It's reliable and works great. Words better with ATs than XTs however due to processing overhead. David J. Buerger dbuerger@scu.bitnet --- ed, i've been using MIRROR for three years and it's great! it supports kermit, zmodem, xmodem, ymodem, hayes, crosstalk and batch file transfer protocols. it'll operate in the background with ease. when your logged in, you begin a kermit session, hit the double-shift keys and presto! you're in DOS. mirror is a clone of crosstalk. and a damn good one at that. it supports 14 different emulations (addsa1, adm3a, ansi, cyber, d210, ibm3101, vt100, tvi 940, 925, 920, etc..) mirror is made by softklone distributing corporation, 1210 east park ave., tallahassee, florida, 32301. (904-878-8564). the latest version is 3.6.12 dated january 13, 1988. i think you could get a copy mail order for under $50. let me know if you have any questions about mirror. i'd be happy to answer them. -- mike regoli indiana university regoli@silver.bacs.indiana.edu ...pur-ee!iuvax!silver!regoli ---
