[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 8087's and V20's in Tandy's 1000sx

oolidjr@hubcap.UUCP (Joe Moll) (03/16/88)

I'm sorry that I havn't responded quicker to these messages that were
posted earlier this month, but I've just had a chance to read them ..

OK ... Here we go ...

With regards to the question about the V-20 in a Tandy 1000sx ...

I posted about a year ago about my use of the V20 in my machine.

I've had the V-20 (8 Mhz) in my 1000sx for at least a year and I've had no
problems with it doing anything weird. On the program QI (no not
Norton's SI) it reports as beins 2.4 times as fast as a PC as it
reported 1.7 times as fast before. On PC Mag.s benchmark, the only real
increase in speed was with the nops execution and block memory moving.
Since the 1000sx uses a DMA, that is prob. not a good thing to base any
speed increase upon.

It does, however increase the throughput of my machine.

Now ... For the 8087 stuff

As far as I know ... there are no 8087 clones. That
Includes NEC. I remember a NEC rep. stating that last summer.

Ok.. Again ... the only thing that the 80c87 does that the 8087 does
not is use less power. the 'c' stands for cmos. Get yourselves a
8087-2 (the 8Mhz version, the 1000SX runs at 7.16 Mhz), plug it in, pull
the jumper beside the 8088-2 (or V20 what ever you have put in there)
and you are good to go!!!!!!!

Thank you.
