I am interested in anyone's experiences with Amstrad computers. In particular, I am interested in their newly released PPC 640 portable computer. This beastie is an 8086 at 8 Mhz with 640k, built in 2400 baud Hayes compatible modem and 1 or 2 3.5 in floppy drives. It also has a full 101 key keyboard (it folds differently than most portables and is longer) and a super-twist screen. The whole thing weighs under 12 pounds. I am interested in a low end portable for document processing while I am on the road and this one is much better value, I think, than the Toshiba T1000 or a NEC multispeed. It costs $999 with 1 floppy and $1099 with 2 (according to the info in January Byte). I have the glossy brochure from Amstrad but am now interested in people's opinions. I don't generally read this group on the net so please e-mail reponses to me. Thanks in advance. -- Anita Cochran uucp: {noao, ut-sally, ut-emx}!utastro!anita arpa: anita@astro.as.utexas.edu snail: Astronomy Dept., The Univ. of Texas, Austin, TX, 78712 at&t: (512) 471-1471
