Today I received two items in the mail from Microsoft. The first was
an update offer to upgrade from MASM 5.0 to 5.1. The offer contained
a letter describing the upgrade terms and an upgrade order form. The
letter stated:
Users of versions lower than 4.0 can obtain version 5.1
(a $150 value) for $75. Users of version 4.0 or higher
can update for only $25. If you acquired any version of
Microsoft Macro Assembler on or after February 1, 1988,
your update is free!
This upset me a little bit at first because I had recently sent them $40
to upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0, and here they were saying that folks could
now go from 4.0 all the way to 5.1 for only $25! Hrrummph!
Then I looked at the order form itself. There were three boxes you could
check:
( ) If you acquired or updated to any version of Microsoft
Macro Assembler ON OR AFTER February 1, 1988, [the upgrade
to 5.1 is free].
( ) If you acquired or updated to Microsoft Macro Assembler
version 5.0 BEFORE February 1, 1988, [the upgrade to 5.1
costs $25].
( ) If you acquired or updated to Microsoft Macro Assembler
Version 4.0 or lower BEFORE February 1, 1988, [the upgrade
to 5.1 costs $75].
(all emphasis theirs)
Well, well, well. . . . Do I detect a slight discrepency! The terms
outlined in the letter do not agree with those on the order form. Since
the letter bore the facsimile signature of a Microsoft representative,
are they not bound by the more liberal terms outlined in that letter?
For the difference between $25 and $75 for those upgrading from 4.0, I
would say it was worth a try.
Oh, my second item from Microsoft? It was my copy of MASM 5.1. They
didn't even bother sending me the 5.0 upgrade I originally ordered.
