[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Mixing Apples & ...

dep@hpcilzb.HP.COM (David Pinsky) (03/24/88)

I an trying to use an Apple Imagewriter II with an Epson Equity III+
(that's an IBM AT clone) running IBM PCDOS 3.1 (soon to be 3.3).
I had a cable built by a guy who knew what pins were necessary for
the two devices to talk.
I use the serial port and run the following commands from my autoexec.bat:

mode com1:9600,n,8,2
mode lpt1:com1:

In general this approach has worked but one major limitation is that
if too much data is thrown at the Imagewriter too fast, chunks of that
data get lost. In one program, I am reduced to sending output to both
printer and screen which invokes a pager mechanism. That way, only
one screenful of data gets transmitted at a time. Of course I have to
sit there and hit return for each page when the printer has caught up.
I am not a happy chappy.

The Questions:

Is this a hand-shaking problem due to an unsupported printer for the IBM?
Is there anything I can do about this?
Is there any software I can buy that might alleviate this problem?
Is there a way to re-configure computer or printer to be friendlier to
	each other?

Thanks in advance for any help at all!
