[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Mono monitor, CGA programs

msmith@topaz.rutgers.edu (Mark Robert Smith) (03/22/88)

I just made the switch from a Panasonic Sr. Partner to a real, PC-II
AD Xt Turbo machine. However, The Sr. Partner used to run CGA
graphics on it's internal B/W monitor very nicely, and my new machine
seems to have, at best, a Hercules adapter.
What do people reccommend as the solution? I may someday upgrade to a
color monitor, so should I go with the ATI EGA Wonder, or just use
CGASIM. Is CGASIM compatible with most things?
Thank you for your help. Any replies will be appreciated.
Mark

By the way, just in case you folks reccomend the EGA Wonder, anybody
want to sell me one cheap?

CGASIM is incompatible with a lot of things. A Hercules card
isn't really a good substitute for a CGA. If you want to get
something that you can use with a CGA or monochrome monitor now,
the ATI wonder card may not be the way to go. There have
been a lot of complaints about incompatibilities in various
displayy mode/monitor combinations. Consider the Paradise
Autoswitch 480, in the same price range, instead.

Hmmm, in my opinion CGA is a poor substitute for Hercules. In any
case, the newest version of SIMCGA works very much better than the
original version. I haven't much use for it, since I rarely run
s/w that requires such, but I did notice that the new one crashes
very little compared to the old.

I very much cherish the resolution that I get with a mono graphics
card, and am not too terribly impressed with any but the very most
expensive color cards (VGA+ is almost as good as herc) -- so here you
see how very different 2 users' requirements can be...

There are *some* Hercules clones out there that beat this problem.
At work our current standard mono card is the MG-150 from DTI (I've
also heard it reffered to by our vendor as an "LTI or el-tek" card
(spelling unknown!)).

This card comes with a program that serves the same function as the
HGC program for the Hercules cards (ie setting FULL, HALKF & DIAG)
a diagnostic program(!) and a color simulator program. The card apparently
has an extra mode used by this software as it *only* works properly with
their card. But the results are amazing. It looked *better* than a CGA
card driving a mono monitor!!! No flicker either.

I have no connection with this company other than as a satisfied
customer...
