[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Need hard disk partitioning sw

garvin@uhccux.UUCP (Jay Garvin) (04/04/88)

I have a friend who has a 40meg hard disk on his pc, but doesn't have
the partitioning software, so he can only use 32megs out of the 40.

Wasting that 8megs is kind of a shame, so I was wondering if there is
any partitioning software out there. I know there are several commercial
packages available for about $60 bucks or so, but I was wondering if
anybody out there decided to tackle the problem themselves and write
a PD or shareware program to do this.

Does anybody know of one?

Aloha,

-Jay

Use Compaq's current Mess-Dos. It supports the full 40meg in one partition:
no barrier at 32meg. I understand it works great. Anyone know what the
limit to a partition size under Compaq's DOS is?

Compaq's Dos allows you to double the size of the partition, at the cost of
doubling the minimum size of a file. In a normal partition (normal MS-DOS)
the max partition is 32Meg, and the minimum filesize is 2k (i.e. if you have a
file that's less than 2k, it takes up 2k anyways). If you double the partition
to 64Meg, then the smallest file is 4k. I believe you can double the partition
a couple of times; though there's no reason to do it more than 3 times anyways
(right now, that is).
  _Get_ the partitioning software...

The fdisk program in PC-DOS 3.3, MSDOS 3.3 and Olivetti(AT) 3.2
does support Harddisk < 32 Mb.
You can creat a partition for say 20 MB the second partition 20 MB
and use it like C: and D: ( if the HD is C:) or D: and E: if th e
HD is D:
