[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Yet Another Programming Editor

toma@tekgvs.TEK.COM (Tom Almy) (03/31/88)

There have been many requests asking about low cost program editors for
the PC. I recently bought Logitech Modula 2 and came across another one,
Logitech Point. This editor comes bundled with Logitech Modula 2 and
Logitech mice. Either can be bought for under $100.

The Point editor is terrific! It is the only program editor that I have
seen that works with the mouse (perhaps I should say DESIGNED to work with
a mouse, like Microsoft Word). It supports multiple, overlapping windows,
either of the same or different files. Works in color and 43 line EGA mode.
Has both a DOS shell escape and the ability to execute dos programs with
standard output directed to a (newly created) window. Standard expected
editor functions. Redefinable keys, menus and mouse button actions.
While not as powerful as my "standard" editor Epsilon, it is quick and
easy to use. I now only use Epsilon if I need its process window or
extensive macro and searching ability (Point does no pattern matching
and allows only a single macro). The editor when used with their Modula 2
(a language I am new to) provides builtin syntax checking, compilation,
linking, execution, and program structure templates -- much nicer than
Borland or Microsoft C's.

Disclaimers:
This opinions are my own.
I have no connection with Logitech except as a customer.
Point and Epsilon are trademarks of Logitech and Lugaru respectively.
The mileage you get may vary...

Jerry Pournelle gives it a good review in the April issue of Byte.

So what does that prove? Jerry still writes things in BASIC!
Actually, I've heard good things about Logitech. What ever happened to
the rumorred modula-2 from Borland?

I've got the Modula-2 stuff, and the editor it nice, but I have
to say that it doesn't compare to BRIEF, which is still the bonus one.
