[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Z-248 memory upgrade, recommendations

desmond@cod.NOSC.MIL (J. Desmond) (05/14/88)

I would appreciate any information I could get concerning
increasing the memory in my Z-248. It currently has 512K and my first
priority is to increase this to 640K. Consequently, an extended
memory board for this computer has to be able to perform back-fill.
The 'official' board for doing this is the Zenith Z-405 memory board
which has just skyrocketed to over $500!!! A secondary item on my
wish list is for any additional memory to be EEMS capable.

I've tried one of the EVEREX boards advertised as being able to
run in an AT but trying 5 different boards in 5 different Z-248s
proved it wasn't going to work. Jerry Pournelle wrote some months
back in Byte that he used a Cheetah Combo board in a Z-248 and it
worked. I heard that AST boards are good bets for compatibility with
     the expanded memory specifications.

Any suggestions? Has anybody used a board in a Z-248 that cost
less than the GNP and had it work? Thanks in advance.

I have a Z-248, and I use a BocaRam AT card from Boca Research. It works fine
in the 248 as long as you use 120ns or faster ram chips. The first two rows
of chips can be 64K, to bring base memory to 640K (I use it this way in my
machine). The remaining take 256K chips and can either be used for EMS or
Extended memory (2Mb total, or 1.5Mb if you use the first two banks for 64K
chips).

The EMS driver supplied with mine is 3.xx. Does anybody know where to get a
4.0 driver for it?

Oh, if you need more memory, there is also a daughterboard available for it.
Adds another 2Mb. The card is also a normal XT card (except for the AT buss
connector) so if anyone out there has an AT board in an XT case it will fit.
