Two questions for knowledgable DOS users -- (1) File Allocation Table: --------------------- I understand that there are two FAT-s on the diskettes. Now, is there a quick + dirty way to fix a damaged disk whose FAT has gotten screwed up ? In the past two months we have had five such incidents, where a disk could not be read. Attempts to recover damaged sectors by using tools like Norton Utils and PC-Tools were unsuccessful. Please e-mail some wisdom to me. (2) Low-level format: ---------------- A hard drive manager software, called PC-Lock was installed on a 20Mb drive. Now the user, wishes to disable the password. The user took the program off (may be incorrectly!). Then the drive was formatted again. Now, even after repeated re-formatting of the drive, one still gets prompted for the password. What do you think is the problem here? Will a low-level format (thru the 'debug' utility) take care of this problem? Any suggestion/wisdom will be appreciated. -- dipto@umbc.bitnet ------\ /------ !uunet!umbc3!dipto -------> In-real-life: <------- dipto@umbc3.umd.edu ------/ Dipto Chakravarty \------ CMSC, U.of Md, 21228
