[comp.sys.ibm.pc] NumLock indicator on a PC

wytten@dg.cs.umn.edu (05/17/88)

Does anyone know if it is possible to put a NumLock indicator on a plain
(but genuine) IBM-PC? I know that AT keyboards can't be used with regular
PC's, at least not without modification.

Is there a signal in the keyboard itself that can be used to light an
LED? I am not willing to modify the keyboard cable to add an extra
conductor if there is not.

I suspect this may be of interest to other PC users, so please post your
reply, if possible.

I got something off a local BBS called "KBFIX3.ARC", I believe.
It will give you both an audible sound (or not, your choice) and a visual
indicator (you pick the location on the screen) to tell you when you
are in numlock, capslock, scrolllock, etc. Very small, very easy to
install, very nice.

Look on your local BBS for this one -- or I'll try to upload it and
send it to Rahul at comp.binaries.ibm.pc if I get enough requests
(via mail only, PLEASE!)

Forgot to indicate in my previous article that KBFIX3 also does many
other nice things for you, like expanding the keyboard buffer for
typeahead, allows you to set the amount of time you hold a key down
before it autorepeats, how long between autorepeats, and how many
copies of the character to output on each autorepeat.

A very nifty little program.
