[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PC-jr memory

Help!!!
I just bought a used pc-jr, and I need to upgrade the memory. But my local
dealer tells me that to get 128k more, it will cost me more than I paid
for the darn thing in the first place. I looked inside and saw that the
memory board had the old 64k chips on it. So isnt it possible to
replace them with 256k chips, and get a full 512k machine? I am desparate,
any advice is welcome.

Memory expansion can be accomplished in various ways. You should get in
touch with some PCjr supply specialists - your local dealer is likely to
not really know a whole lot about PCjrs and what is available.

There is an internal memory board, the jrHotshot, for $200 +/- depending
on options, that will bring you up to 640K, etc. Other folks can put
256K chips in some sidecars replacing the 64K chips -- I am not a hardware
expert, so I can't comment on the possibility of replacing the original
64K-128K with 256K chips.

Some vendors off the top of my head include, PC Enterprises in Belmar NJ,
Paul Rau in Galt CA (near Sacramento). Since the Jr is a slightly strange
beastie at times, you should consider getting in touch (and preferably
joining) a PCjr users group. I say this being the newsletter editor of
the San Francisco PCjr Users Group, but there are groups around the country,
and even a national PCjr newsletter.

Our club president, John King, (415) 472-7035, is always happy to help
out on questions, and is more hardware oriented (yes we get calls from
all over the country - members too!). You can also call our BBS at
(415) 997-4874 1200/300 baud etc., but its quicker talking to a human!

I'm scratching my memory (human) and seem to remember we trade our
newsletter with a group in Illinois, but I can't swear by it. I'll have
to look into that. Hope this is a start anyway.

Ciao,
Herb

Greetings again. The Users Group I was trying to remember that is in Illinois
is the "Fox Valley PC Association", which just recently changed its name
from the "Fox Valley PCjr Association" to broaden its base. Their address:

Fox Valley PC Association
P.O. Box 294
Plainfield, IL 60544

Also, PC Enterprises in Belmar NJ, which I mentioned in my previous posting,
can be reached at (800) 922-7257. Paul Rau is (209) 745-9284, voice from
9AM to 4PM, data otherwise (Galt CA). Prefer Texas? Try, Computer Reset
in Garland Texas, voice (214) 276-8072, BBS 300 baud at (214) 272-7920.
Or Solid Rock Electronics in Arlington Texas, (817) 467-7878. Ah...
here's one in Ohio, maybe a little closer: OOwl Software in Columbus at
(614) 436-0219. There are bunches more, but you get the idea.

Good Luck... You're really not alone... it only seems that way!!

Ciao,
Herb
