thanks for everyone's responses about getting 132 columns in VT-100
emulation. 
It seems you need a combination of a video card that supports 132 cols. and 
communcation software that does the same. We have settled on using SmartTerm 
software with the ATI Wondercard... also VTerm will also work apparently.
Other combos suggested:

ZCOM with special EGA/VGA card
ST240 from Persoft with certain cards (Paradise)
MS-Kermit v2.3 with certain cards.
PC-VT with cerain cards.

Also you can fake it with LC-TERM which shifts 52 cols with one key back and 
forth (80 col display), or SmartTerm without the Wondercard will let you 
scroll back and forth 132 cols (again only  80 cols displayed at a time).
