[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Tape Backup recommendations sought

ralf@b.gp.cs.cmu.edu (Ralf Brown) (05/31/88)

After idly looking at ads for tape backup units for a while, I am now
definitely going to buy one (having just suffered a disk crash--luckily,
I had a completely current monthly backup....).

So, any recommendations for tape backups meeting the following specs?

	. half-height internal
	. 40M - 60M (more than 42M is actually superfluous)
	. must do file-by-file full/incremental backup/restore
. if it runs off floppy controller, must allow two floppies on
	  standard AT WD hard/floppy controller
	. cost < $450

Speed is not really important. Even if it takes 40 minutes to backup 20
megs, I'll still save about 39.8 minutes (since I won't have to sit and
do the floppy shuffle).

Looking at _Computer_Shopper_ ads, I find six contenders:

Irwin 40 meg (though I've heard a lot of negative comments)
	Colorado Memory Systems 44 meg
	Archive 40 meg
	Mountain 40 meg
	Alloy 40 meg
	Everex 40 meg cassette

Anybody have comments on these (or other cheap) systems? Send mail, I'll
summarize to the net.
