I find that this version of emacs is a vast improvement over what I was using, the uemacs that I snarfed from HZ100 sometime back. It is much faster on the screen and handles the screen and cursor movements in more the way I would have hoped. I never liked the way the old uemacs did half page scrolls forward and backwards on C-N and C-P commands near the top and bottom of a window. It was always difficult to display exactly the section I wanted of a file. Freemacs keeps the cursor a few lines away from the top or bottom and scrolls one line at a time with these commands giving you a view of what is coming or going from the cursor before it is completely gone. There are lots of other neat features that I haven't got far into yet, but overall, I am very happy with the change. Michael

Freemacs looks pretty awesome to me too. I was pretty thrilled with it and its extension language until I tried ^x2 twice in a row. Two windows maximum, folks. I imagine that freemacs will be THE editor of choice under DOS, after it has evolved a bit more. But for now, I'll still with uEmacs 3.9++ ! -- | Clint Jeffery, University of Arizona Department of Computer Science | cjeffery@arizona.edu -or- {ihnp4 noao allegra cmcl2}!arizona!cjeffery --

I just thought that I should post the correct directory in SIMTEL20.ARPA, since the location given in a previous posting was incorrect. The files are located in the directory PD1:<MSDOS.FREEMACS> as of 6/5/88. There are five files, listed in the previous posting. I tried your Freemacs on my XT-clone and I found 3 problems - 1 - when you start it up it does nothing until you type ENTER twice ! 2 - it wont edit largish files, say 100K (64K data segment?) 3 - it leaves the cursor highlighted on my Herc display when you exit ------------------------------------------------------------ Andrew Wylie, University of London Computer Centre, 20 Guilford Street, London WC1N 1DZ, England.
