-- I am looking for tools, compilers, and an operating system to build a data collection system on an 80386 computer. The majority of the system will be written in FORTRAN and being to quickly store data from the bus to the space above the one megabyte barrier is required. Operating system interrupt latency should be small though the use of buffered A/D devices should help in that regard. Any suggestions/experiences would be helpful. Thanks. -- John Herman ARPA: herman@marlin.nosc.mil

John,
You might want to look at the BASIC Language Processor card by
Hewlett-Packard. It drops into a 286 or 386 machine (currently
only the HP Vectra and two or three specific clones are supported),
has an HP-IB bus out the back, and can hold several Mb of RAM on
board. Many people have successfully used it for data collection.
The BASIC language on the board is _very_ robust and tailored
for very fast I/O. What's more, the processor board can run
in the background while you run your DOS applications in the
foreground.
Please forgive the commercial. I just think you would do
yourself a favor to at least check out this card.
