Can somebody tell me how to get a program to run in the background, in
resident memory, on an IBM PC/XT compat with MS-DOS 3.10? I guess it'll have
to be done in assembler.
What I need is something to scan the modem for calls while leaving the PC
free for other stuff. If a call comes in, it could ask the user whether
they want to give up what they're doing so it can answer the phone, or,
preferably, answer the phone and carry on a conversation over the modem
while continuing with the user at the keyboard.
Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would direct you to a program called RAMNET. It's a memory-resident BBS system supporting Xmodem up- and downloads, chat, and mail. You can check it out at 212-889-6438. In case the price (maybe $300) is too stiff for you, RAMNET has available for download at least two other RAM resident comm packages, one of which may suit your needs. RAMNET is written by the author of FLUSHOT, by the way... it is also available there. -- Tom Betz UUCP: ...!cmcl2!phri!dasys1!tbetz ZCNY "When personal computers are outlawed, Yonkers, NY, USA 10701-2509 only outlaws will have personal computers."
