[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Battery Replacement for PC/AT

hlison@bbn.com (Herb Lison) (07/14/88)

I've discovered that it is very difficult to get a replacement battery for
an IBM PC/AT. None of the local distributors I've called, including
BusinessLand or ComputerLand appear to carry them. None of the mail order
houses either. What's the story here. Anybody have any ideas?

beware -- some AT clones give the symptoms of bad battery even
though their battery is good. the problem is a buggy motorola
part that made it into lots of AT clones -- it manages to blow out
the CMOS memory on power down occasionally...

Check Computer Shopper (available at many bookstores, such
as B. Dalton's Computer Book Store, and computer stores).
Also, computer suppliers like Inmac have the battery. (Inmac
has several shipping centers around the U.S. and you can get
one day service.) Prices range from $14 to $35 for the same
battery, depending upon the seller. (I saw the $14 price in
Computer Shopper.)

Last week I received a catalog from Bell Atlantic which included replacement
batteries for the AT and the two Compaq '286 machines:

   p/n IB5253 PC/AT
   p/n CQ5280 Compaq Deskpro 286
   p/n CQ5114 Compaq Portable 286

All three are priced at $27.95

The telephone number is 1-800-523-0552. They accept Visa, MasterCard,
and American Express.

There's an ad in PC Magazine, July 88, page 390, for a company called:
	IBC (International Battery Corp.)
	16735 Saticoy St., Suite 111
	Van Nuys, CA 91406
Who claim to be the largest supplier of computer batteries for IBM AT's,
PS/2's, and "all other computers." They'll sell you a replacement battery
for $27.50 (single unit price) plus $3.00 s/h. Or overnight shipping for
$14.00 more. They have toll-free order numbers:
	800 654-3790 (US)
	800 225-9359 (CA)

I have never dealt with these people, but just saw the ad.

Thanks for all the replies to my query about AT batteries. I located one
at a local non-franches computer store. Someone called from BusinessLand to
say that he was wrong, they do carry the batteries (at a hefty markup naturally).

You can get an adaptor which will allow you to use normal cheap
batteries for this, but I can't find the brand name without powering
down the box I'm on. First cost is about $25, and after that it uses
flashlight batteries. Many clones did it right the first time.

    Hello All,

The above mentions a possible BAD part in some AT clones on the market,
so now the question is, does anybody know what part this is ?? Also is a
replacement part avalible that can be installed to correct the problem.
I have seen several machines do this, and always chalked it up to a power
line glitch...

Radio Shack should begin carrying replacement batteries for the PC/AT sometime
soon. They didn't have them last time I checked, but they should be in stock
within 2 months, easy. When they finally arrive, you will be able to get your
batteries locally, without having to wait for mail-order. You will also have
to pay a premium for that convenience...
