We've been having problems with a Tecmar QIC-120 drive. Sometimes, it will give the error: data found where not expected. This seems to happen on particular tapes, but not always. We've sent the drive back three times for repairs (under warranty), but the problem keeps coming back. Tecmar says other people have had the same problem, but they don't ever seem to know what's wrong (they keep giving explanations -- first a bad motor, then improperly aligned heads, and finally some coating that had to be cleaned off -- but the problem remains). I'm beginning to suspect that each time certain tapes are erased, the alignment gets changed a bit so that some old data remains. I'll probably try a bulk tape eraser and see what happens. Has anybody else had similar problems? If so, have you solved the problem? The problem is more annoying than it is serious (the tape cannot be used past the point where the error occurs, but everything before the error is okay).
