I recently installed an ST-251 in my AT-clone. When I powerdown the system, the drive makes a fairly loud GRRRRRRRRRR sound for about three seconds. It this the sound of the automatic head parking "feature"? It sounds more like the heads being unmercifully pounded into oblivion. It isn't due to the controller (OMTI 8240) since it sounds the same without any controller cables attached. Mike Vehonsky AT&T Network Systems Columbus, OH

It this the sound of the automatic head parking Mine has made the same noise on powerdown for two whole years. It's still working fine. In a recent issue of BYTE, they reviewed 40 MB hard disks and noticed that the ST-251 made a noise which sounds as we describe. I guess it's a "feature". In any case it does not seem to do any harm to the drive or the data stored therein. ---- -- l\ /l' _ Mike Schuster {sun!hoptoad,cmcl2!phri}!dasys1!schuster l \/ lll/(_ Big Electric Cat schuster@dasys1.UUCP l lll\(_ New York, NY USA DELPHI,GEnie:MSCHUSTER CIS:70346,1745
