[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Help Wanted

brmorrow@uokmax.UUCP (Brett Morrow) (08/19/88)

I was looking for some assistance. I am thinking of getting
a packard bell 12 MHZ AT clone. I was wondering if anyone out
there has used one of these machine and can tell me if it works
well. I am planning on running SCO Zenix and a terminal off
it.

I was also wondering about tape drives. The system I am planning on
will have a 40 meg drive. I am wondering if I need a 40 meg tape
backup. Or will a smaller one work with multiple tapes.

One move thing that I wish to know. What type of terminals are
good for use with Zenix. I have access to buying televideo's
will this brand do. (I do not know the modem number right now
but any help with different models will be appreciated.)

Any help with this would be appreciated.

please send me replies by mail at

            Thank You in advance.

I think you may be happier with a 60MB driver, using 30, 45, or 60MB
tapes as needed. These drives are faster, and work well with the Xenix
tape drivers. There are some limitations, including not being able to
place multiple files or save sets on a single tape (if you are talking
about the unit I mean which runs off the floppy controller.

The 60MB drives can be used to creates tapes for other machines, using
the QIC-24 format. Finally, using the backup utilities, such as dump,
tar, or cpio, you will need more than 40MB of tape to backup 40MB of
data (not just a 40MB disk, a FULL 40MB disk).

This is not to imply that a 40MB would not be cost effective in some
cases, but to mention that you do get more capability with the larger
drives, other than just more space.

Xenix will work with almost any terminal. This is one you can buy on
price. There is an '/etc/termcap' file which describes several hundred
terminals supported ( some are the same).

Unless you plan to do something fancy, you can use a Hayes compatible
modem, but the source for the dialer program is there, so you can
support any type of modem if you can program C a little.

  Good luck.
