Hello. Sorry for the cross posting, but the request seems to fit all. I have an 80286 PC, and I am interested in running Unix on it, preferably compatible with BSD, etc. What I would like to know is: 1. Are there any interesting public domain implementations? 2. What are the commercial options? 3. How much is it likely to cost me? I'm sure the subject has been discussed before, so if anyone has a summary or something, feel free to e-mail it to me. Otherwise, I will certainly read the newsgroups in question. -- Matthew Lewis, University of Amsterdam Grote Bickersstraat 72 31-20-52 51 220 1013 KS Amsterdam UUCP: mcvax!uvabick!matthew The Netherlands BITNET: a717matt@hasara11 CIS: [73717,3711]

To run 286 UNIX on a PC, there are basically 3 choices: SCO XENIX Microport UNIX Interactive UNIX All of them are based on UNIX system V, and SCO XENIX is probably the most different, but also has the most extentions. I don't know of any BSD versions for the 286. I'll comment on SCO XENIX a bit here, because that's what we use here. SCO XENIX the most expensive, I it very reliable (although some disagree), has easy install and system maintenance programs, and has a lot of ready-to-use applications like: Foxbase (like dBASE), Lyrix (wordproc), Professional (1-2-3). Since this IS the wrong group, I won't make it too long... I don't know about prices too much, but in Amsterdam, you can call: Radix B.V. 020-142463 which sells all 3 flavours, to get a relative comparision.
