I remember some questions a while back concerning the ~3 sec growling sound that the Seagate ST-251 makes when you remove power. Several people indicated that this was the "auto park" mechanism. This is indeed the case. I had a chance to power one up on the bench the other day and watch the servo motor carefully during power down. As soon as power is removed, the stepper motor starts rotating the heads towards the center of the drive. When they hit the end-stop, the growling noise persists for about 3 secs as the positioner is held against the end stop till power dies off. This is a very similar sound to that which occurs during the "recalibrate" sequence at power up. Just thought some of you might be interested that this is a normal noise. To quote from the Seagate manual: All Seagate disc drives, with the exception of the ST213, ST225, ST225N, and ST238R products, have an automatic read/write head parking function at power-off. This feature does not require operator intervention. -- Bob Weissman Internet: bob@acornrc.uucp UUCP: ...!{ ames | decwrl | oliveb | pyramid }!acornrc!bob Arpanet: bob%acornrc.uucp@ames.arc.nasa.gov
