[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Other ARC programs vs. SEA

JDYARD01@ULKYVX.BITNET (Jonathan D. Yarden) (09/09/88)

Thanks to Keith Peterson for finding evidence that SEA had unjustly filed suit
against Phil Katz! I too have an "ARC" program in the works, and you can bet
I'm going to distribute it when I am finished. If SEA wants to try to pull the
same stunt they did with Phil Katz with me, you can BET they won't get away
with it!

I remembered that a LONG time before SEA came on the scene, there were lots
of books on data compression algorithms and even more software on putting
lots of files into one (remember SQ and LU?). I hope that the people who
TRULY invented the data compression algorithms and TRULY invented the library
idea come forth and be heard; what Thom Henderson is trying to do is just
not legal. PERIOD.

I have DATED proof that the idea for file archiving is NOT SEA's. I also
have proof that the routines for doing the data compression ARE public domain.
I also have proof that SEA's file format CANNOT BE COPYRIGHTED OR TRADEMARKED.
And if anyone doesn't already know this, the source code for SEA arc was
released by SEA, and allowed to be publicly distributed. Note that I did
NOT say that the source code was in the public domain, just distributed.
I can only say therefore, that SEA is just setting themselves up for legal
action AGAINST them if they persist with this "our ARC is the only ARC"
attitude.

Does that mean I am blatantly ignoring SEA's threat to authors of file archive
software that is compatible with SEA ARC?

YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT I AM!
