[comp.sys.ibm.pc] CompuAdd EGA monitors

kahn@xanth.cs.odu.edu (Gary I Kahn) (10/01/88)

I'm considering buying an EGA monitor and card from CompuAdd. Does anyone
have any comments about the quality of their "no-name" monitors or the
Standard Brand EGA cards? I'm also concerned about the risk of ordering
a monitor through a mail order company (and about their shipping it, and
my receiving it intact). In the monitor, I'm looking for a low-glare screen
with very good text quality and small "divergence" of the colors at the edges.
Thanks in advance.

I assume price is a factor, and I don't know the current prices except to
be pretty sure they're less than I paid a year+ ago, but you might consider
an Everex Micro Enhancer Deluxe adapter (it's a little better than EGA,
actually, can co-exist with another graphics adapter, and includes a
parallel port). It was $158 from Club American Technologies. The monitor
is a Tatung CM1380F, (13") and I am well pleased with the combination. There
is no edge divergence worth noting. As to text quality, the native font is
not especially wonderful (it's the same one you see everywhere), but I found
a utility that lets you have whatever you can devise in the way of a screen
font, and I use it for many hours with no eyestrain. All of this is not
quite what you asked about, but I don't recall seeing much mention of this
sort of thing here, so I thought I'd volunteer this info. Oh yeah, the
monitor was not so cheap: $480. But prices really come down sometimes.
The Micropolis 1335 HD (72MB) I paid $890 for in March is now $560 (also
from Club).

As for mail order shipping, as long as they use UPS, I don't think you're
too likely to have a problem. I've bought two complete systems by mail
order, both shipped UPS from CA to WI, everything worked fine right out
of the box.

I've had no contact with CompuAdd, so can't say a thing about them. As
for Club and other vendors mentioned, standard disclaimers apply.

...I've got the Samsung EGA with the card from CompuAdd, and with one small
problem, I'm seriously impressed!

...Edge divergence? WHAT edge divergence?

(as for the problem, the card tends to lose synch every now and then, but it's easily corrected by resetting the video mode.)

I reccomment it, still. The display is clean, and the glare is really low for
a monitor of this type.
