[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Thesaurus, anyone?

gauss@homxc.UUCP (E.GAUSS) (10/04/88)

I am looking for a thesaurus that can run stand alone, and not hopelessly
imbedded within a word processor. Alternatively I would like to buy the
data base for a thesaurus.

This curious situation came about because I wrote a series of filters to
work with the vi editor and lets me do all of the word processing I need.
I use a speller, Microspell, which is a stand alone.

My balk at the big wordprocessors and their thesaruses is not the cost but
rather I really don't want to learn a new system. I automatically hit the
right buttons in vi. My combination of vi and my filters runs nicely
on both the big Unix hosts and my little PC6300.

Does anyone make a thesaurus that runs as a stand alone?

Thanks in advance.

I'm using Webster's New Word On-Line Thesaurus. I got it out of the
junk box at a computer store for $25. I don't know its retail price.
Its a TSR that you can configure to work with your editor or you
can press its hot key and type in a work. Its interactive, won't
work in a batch mode. I like it a lot, only problem is that it blinks
too much when its popped up on the screen.

Borland's Turbo-lightning is both an excellent stand-alone spelling checker
and a superb thesaurus. Actually, I do not use the spelling checker much
since the word-processor I use has one, but the thesaurus is indispensible.

I would like to thank the 20+ people who answered my query,
article <3677@homxc.UUCP>, gauss@homxc.UUCP (E.GAUSS) where
I was looking for a thesaurus.

Turbo Lightning was recommended by many. But as the local Dalton book
store had Webster's NewWorld that would work with my copy of VI, that is
what I got. It seems to work.

Thanks gang, for the help!
