[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Problem with PC XT game port

Hello:

I'm hoping that someone on the net can help me with a problem that I'm
having with my PC's game port.

My PC is a turbo XT clone, running at 8 MHz. I have 512K conventional
memory and another 512K on an Intel Above Board. The system uses an Everex
EGA card and a Samsung 1452 EGA color monitor. Also installed is a multi
I/O card with one of two serial ports activated a parallel print port, and
a game port. The system has two floppies and no hard disk, at this time.

The problem that I'm having is this: when using my joystick (a Gravis mkVI)
with programs like MS Flight Simulator, Battle Zone, etc., the stick itself
functions properly, but the firing buttons don't respond. On programs that
require you to calibrate the joystick, I can't calibrate, and the program
hangs up because it can't read the buttons. (Logical conclusion is that
the joystick is flaky, but hang on for a minute.)

I have a program called VSI that I have run, which shows a graphic
representation of what's in the system. When it gets to the game port
adaptor, VSI says that no adaptor is installed; everything else on that
board registers as it should. I've even tried putting in a separate game
port, with the same result. Another diagnostic program that I have
properly reads the game port as being installed, but the buttons still
don't function.

I've checked all the switches, and can't find anything that I need set,
other than what's already been done. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks ahead of time.

Don't depend on VSI for your game port. I have seen it indicate that a game
port was present when one was not installed, and vice versa.
