[comp.sys.ibm.pc] *NIX utils for PC

ray@ole.UUCP (Ray Berry) (10/12/88)

MKS has gotten a lot of attention for their utils on the net - and
deservedly so (I use them too). However, I'd like to bring to attention
of the net an equally high-quality offering that you have probably never
heard of. To wit:

	Thompson Automation
	PO Box 5163
	Beaverton, OR 97006
	(503) 645-9434

There are two products- (1) PercentShell unix shell & utilities, and
(2) AwkPlus - an implementation of the 'new' version of AWK.
   PercentShell includes:
basename cat chmod cmp cp cu cut date
df diff dirname du egrep fgrep find grep
hd head keybuf keypush login ls mf mkdir
mkuser more mv paste printenv pr pwd rm
rmdir sed sh sort split tail tee touch
tr uniq wc whereis

These are high-quality implementations and feature many intelligent ex-
tensions to deal with the oddities of DOS. The shell itself is a bit of
a mongrel, combining the best features of all three commonly used shells.
It uses an overlay system so that the shells size shrinks to 20-30K
during execution of other programs.
'keybuf' is a tsr that fixes the ctl-s/ctl-q behavior of the pc, and ex-
tends typeahead to 128 char's. keypush allows text to be pushed to the
keyboard buffer- very handy in .bat and .sh files. I have been using this
product for years and am very happy with it. It is mature and clean.
The second product ,'AwkPlus', an implementation of the 'new'
('85?) version of AWK. This is a complete implementation, again with
quite a few non-trivial and useful extensions. Unlike the AWK sold with
the MKS toolkit, this one is compiled under large-model.

Pricing:	(AwkPlus include the new AWK book)
Quan	PercentShell	AwkPlus Both
   1 $95 $95 $150
 2-4 ( 30 % off single quan )
 5-9 ( 40 % off single quan )

The only obvious thing missing here is VI - just isn't offered. Aside
from that, this package differentiates itself from MKS primarily by the
many extensions specific to enhancing it's functionality on PCs, whereas
MKS is a strict port.

Standard disclaimer - just a satisfied customer. This stuff works well.
