[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Magic CV -- Anyone Used It?

cramer@optilink.UUCP (Clayton Cramer) (10/05/88)

A company called Nu-Mega Technologies sells a product called Magic CV
that claims to use the virtual machine capabilities of the 386 to run
CodeView in one address space, and the application being debugged in
the other address space. As a consequence, CodeView only takes up
8K of address space.

Has anyone used this product? Does it really work? It sounds really
neat, but it's $199, and I'm not keen on spending the money for a 386
machine to use it with if it doesn't work reliably, and as they claim.

It probably works as advertised, but the new Turbo Debugger has the same (386)
mode built in. It also has a mode wherein a small (~10k) tsr runs on the
target computer, and the full debugger runs on another pc connected via the
serial port. This gives you the small memory usage advantage on your
present 286 or PC. (ok, ok, you *do* have to have *2* computers...)

And the Turbo Debugger only costs $150 and they toss in Turbo C,
Turbo Assembler, and Turbo Pascal for free. :-)

And oh yeah, it comes with a conversion program to convert EXEs with CV debug
information to Turbo Debugger format.

Kind of makes the whole question moot, eh? Did I mention that the Turbo
Debugger is the best debugger I've ever used? I've used CV a *lot*, and
it can't hold a candle to TD.

Only if you already own an older version of either TC or TP. Otherwise, they
"only" throw in TA.

I believe the $150 offer is open only to registered Turbo users, and
runs to the end of November. (Don't quote me on it, though. I don't
have the ad in front of me right now.)

Ok, so after November, you pay $99 and get Turbo Debugger and Turbo Assembler,
but no TC or TP. Still half the price and twice the debugger of Magic CV.
:-)

In fact, it's 3 debuggers. An 80386 version that leaves a full 640K for your
program, the regular version, and the "remote" version that runs through your
serial port and only takes up 10K in your target machine.

Are people sure about this? I talked to a Borland representative a few weeks
ago, at a trade show, and was told that the educational discount was only
applicable to those taking classes using the compilers...
