[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Anyone ever replace a Tandy 1200 motherboard with a clone one?

jeff@drexel.UUCP (Jeff White) (10/14/88)

We have a Tandy 1200 with a blown motherboard (I know because the same
thing happened about 6 months ago). When we got it fixed the last time,
we got a new motherboard, and the cost was either $150 or $250 (probably
the latter). I've been looking into upgrading the machine, and it seems
like this would be the perfect time. Clone 10 MHz V20 motherboard seem to
be around $100-$200, and I figure that, along with the boards (disk, video,
serial) and ram in the 1200, I should be able to assemble a pretty decent
system, for hopefully less than it would cost us to fix the base 1200.
What I would like to know, to those that may have done it, is if there are
any peculiarities of the 1200 that complicated the installation (like their
power supply is 1/2" bigger than the norm). I'm confident I can do the job,
I'd just like to know if I should expect to run into any problems or
surprises. Alos, anyone have a good motherboard the recommend. I may look
into a 286 one, but with the standard 50-100 watt power supply, 10 Meg full
height hard disk and 360k full height floppy (on 8 bit controller), I don't
think it makes any sense.
Would I be able to use the BIOS ROMS from the 1200 on the clone (in case the
clone's was of poor quality)?
