srt@ucla-cs.UUCP (05/15/85)
I've gotten about 20 requests for a SPUDNET map since the gateway at
ucla-cs opened up, and I noticed an address request in net.net-people the
other day, so I'm posting an abbreviated guide to SPUDNET here (Most of
this is drawn from the SPUDNET Protocol Guide SXL-14). Further questions
can be directed to me or to the SPUDNET moderator, Douglas Trainor
(trainor!ucla-cs).
These are the current major SPUDNET sites (as of 4/85):
Name Poll Notes
ucla-cs Demand Gateway to USENET.
dddrcf Daily
cldh Daily Abandoned Bell switching center (?)
ihop Morning
berke Morning Limited traffic allowed.
russet Demand SPUDNET administration site, also has
limited gate to USENET through vvlxtr.
bbring Twice daily Ring of Apple-II bboards.
bigmac Daily Goldman's.
opark.6 ?? Been down lately.
lexhax Midnight Timekeeper for SPUDNET.
idaho Demand Mail only.
lthouse Daily
These are the secondary sites. Unless marked otherwise they are polled
once a day on an if demand basis by one or more of the major sites:
bbvxen hslpc klingon shltz croesus*
lnwdl ppvax qbert rehier bigman
yloh elbib kyle psato buranim**
ianian
* Password access only
** Canada
Polling protocol is as given is SXL-7. A program implementing this in
xlisp was posted to net.sources several months ago. A C version is
under development at aqfc@lexhax.spud. Pathing is done at each site
according to an algorithm that guarantees least time in transit between
major sites (but does not guarantee quickest travel to secondary sites).
A description and implementation of this algorithm was presented at
the Second Symposium on Network Traffic Analysis (Terre Haute, 1983) and
is available from the author at edmond@ianian.spud.
If there is sufficient interest perhaps we should start up net.spud, which
I'll arrange to port to SPUDNET.
