I am attempting to get TOPS networking software working simultaneously with Microsoft Windows/386. I have had some success today, but I am having periodic unexplained hangs of the machine. They are rather funny, as DOS gets real confused, like forgetting internal commands, and then forgetting about the Path that it should use, and then eventually hang. Has anyone managed to get this working well? Has anyone even tried to get this working? I'll be happy to share what I've learned and maybe we can figure out a 'real' solution. Please respond either here or directly. Here is my configuration: PS/2 model 80 with 6 megabytes of memory DOS 3.3 Windows/386 version 2.03 TOPS version 2 Bill Howell howell@cs.unc.edu 919-962-1759

I'm not sure if there is any relation, but I had similar mysterious "hangups" while trying to get Windows/286 running on my Zenith Z-248. Windows wouldn't even finish loading with TOPS installed - it just hung with the Windows title screen showing. That was bad enough, but even after I removed TOPS (I eventually even removed the device driver for the Flashcard), I couldn't get Windows to run for more than about 5 minutes. It seemed to lock-up anytime I began to stress its memory usage. For example, when trying to open a second application (even if I had closed the window for the first one) or trying to print something. Very disappointing and not what you'd expect from a mature product from a respected company. My configuration is a Zenith Z-248 (AT-clone) with 3M of RAM (2.5M is extended memory). I was trying to run Windows/286 ver. 2.1 using the Microsoft Extended Memory Manager and SMARTDrive. Lee Zimmerman Naval Ocean Systems Center zimmer@nosc.mil

I gave up on trying to run with expanded memory (problems during the boot, perhaps similar to yours), and just used SMARTDrive and extended memory. > My configuration is a Zenith Z-248 (AT-clone) with 3M of RAM (2.5M is > extended memory). [Discussion of Windows locking up with TOPS networking deleted] Windows 2.03, Windows/386, Windows/286, etc. (i.e. all windows in the 2.0 and later generation) LOCK UP if there is an EMS driver which does not conform to LIM 4.0. The symtom is that the title screen comes up, and then nothing further happens. I have seen this on my Zenith 386 (Zenith has an EMS driver for a spare 256K they leave unused -- LIM 3.2) ATs with older EMS boards, etc. The only EMS boards I know of that don't do this is AST EEMS boards with LIM 4.0 drivers. I figured Microsoft might fix this problem with the 2.1 releases, but that didn't happen. -- Daniel Senie UUCP: harvard!ulowell!cloud9!dts Stratus Computer, Inc.
