[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Commercial software using shareware ARCs

lane@dalcs.UUCP (John Wright/Dr. Pat Lane) (10/25/88)

To add a few sticks to this campfire:

A commercial statistics package SYSTAT (I forget the company and the version
I saw) is distributed as self-extracting archives using PKARC. They did not
alter the PKXSF (?) program in any way that I can recall. I.e. it said it
was PKXSF and you could get a help screen with the request to send $ to PK.

I have recieved several academic/research/educational packages (for environ.
modelling, etc.) that were distributed using PKARC and included PKXARC.COM.
Again, there was no attempt to hide the program's identity and the Copyright
notice and $ request in the help screen were intact. PK's request to
distribute only the full package was in several cases, however, not honoured.
