According to the November 1988 issue of _Byte_, the NeXT runs the Mach Unix kernel developed, which is compatible with BSD 4.3 with extensions for shared memory, interprocess communication, and multiprocessing support via threads (not currently implemented). Although the machine will come with a windowing system pasted atop the kernel, the kernel commands will be available. Sounds to me like the NeXT has a pretty sizable base of software out there already!
