[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Basic "PLAY" statement

bob@imspw6.UUCP (Bob Burch) (10/27/88)

From Ted Holden at HTE:

I am not aware of any real standard for musical notation in the PC
world; I figured the closest thing to a standard was probably the
notation of the "play" statement in BASIC language. IBM and numerous
other vendors have always bundled BASIC with PC-DOS/MS-DOS and manuals
for BASIC should always be within walking distance of a majority of
users, certainly no further away than the nearest B.Dalton's store
for anyone. The BASIC "play" notation is fairly simple to code and
requires no graphics or extra hardware to use. VMUSIC notation is
simply that of the BASIC "play" command with a "V" thrown in for voice
and notation for tempo removed.

The BASIC Play command is entirely non-standard, non-portable, and
doesn't contain enough information for any serious music. Although
there is no standard computer notation, you can store your music as
MIDI data.
